Acomb Parish Council, along with other Parish Councils in Northumberland, has declared its support for the Northumberland County Council target for managing carbon emissions.
The Parish Council has set up a Climate Change Sub-Committee to support environmental projects which are appropriate for Acomb and will support Northumberland County Council’s target of net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030.

The UK government has a target of net zero emissions by 2050 and interim targets to reach that goal. This will affect all our lives, and we can embrace this as an opportunity and combine the global climate benefits with those in our village and parish. For example, reducing our emissions can help us lower our home heating costs, increase comfort and improve health. There are also associated jobs/employment and business potential. By working together in the Parish we can aim to increase these benefits and opportunities.
Protecting and restoring ecosystems can help us to cope with the impact of climate change. For instance, measures are being put in place to protect the headwaters of our rivers, streams and tributaries to help hold back the worst effects of extremely high rainfall events. By managing hedgerows and hedgerow trees, rainfall can infiltrate via hedgerow root systems to enable the water table to be maintained at a sustainable level. By keeping and enhancing flower-rich verges for pollinators, they will hopefully have enough nectar corridors to also pollinate our fruit and crops.
Acomb lies within a mixed farmed landscape and has a broad range of habitats including broadleaf woodland, hedgerows with hedgerow trees, herb rich grassland, streams and rushy pasture to name a few. We want to liaise with residents, land-owners including Northumberland County Council and other organisations to protect and enhance our habitats for the good of the community, for biodiversity and to help us face climate change.
